(noun) in•ter•ven•shun—Intervention is the action taken by family, friends, employers and/or concerned others to actively assist someone to change unacceptable behaviors by engaging in treatment.

Families who live with the disease of addiction and/or other behavioral health problems, generally come to feel guilty, ashamed and blamed–by themselves and others–for the problems in their families. There is a circular causality in families with afflicted members; the family is affected by the addiction/behavior and the family affects the course of the addictive disease/behavioral health problem. The problem eventually spirals out of control.

It stops only when the family becomes motivated to change. The family must decide that it is no longer willing to be controlled by the disease of addiction and/or related behavioral health problems.

It takes courage to initiate the intervention process. But, it takes only one in the family to start meaningful change. One person is capable of mobilizing others to join in stopping the destructive impact of untreated addiction/behavior on the family. It takes courage to come together as a circle of concern to address the painful issues of addiction and behavior health problems.

For change to happen, each family needs to believe that change is possible. We believe that families are intrinsically healthy and competent with the resources necessary to initiate change. If you are reading this, you are already in some stage of change. Focusing your energies by mobilizing others for support is the next step.

OUR SKILL is in providing the guidance that mobilizes those resources in a manner that allows the individual in crisis to accept help and begin treatment. Regardless of whether you are: a parent concerned about an adult or adolescent child; a husband or wife concerned about a partner; a son/daughter concerned about a parent; a sibling concerned about a brother or sister; or a concerned other for a close friend or colleague, we can help you get the addicted individual started in treatment.

The method builds on the strengths and commitment of the family’s motivation to change.

The method is invitational. Research shows that most substance abusers are willing to participate in a family meeting centered around the topic of their use when a loving and direct approach is used to invite them. We are trained to coach you in how best to approach your loved one.

We know that you have a long-standing investment in your loved one’s well-being and don’t want to do anything to jeopardize that relationship. The method respects that relationship by engaging your loved one so that they never feel “ambushed” by the process.

As Interventionists, we provide guidance and support for you in getting your loved one started in recovery.

is one of the few intervention methods that has been formally investigated in a study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and is cited as an “evidence based” best practice.

More than 80% of family, friends and concerned others who make the initial contact to help an individual get into treatment complete the intervention.

is 90% effective in encouraging individuals to enter into treatment and/or self-help, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, race or substance/compulsive behavior of choice.

Sixty percent of those who contact are successful after just the first stage of intervention, meaning the family/ support network is able to do most of the work internally with coaching from our staff.
